Fiber construction projects happen in five main steps. They are typically in the following order but sometimes order may vary slightly.
- Mainline construction. This is placing the main fiber line in either the public right-of-of ways or alleys.
- Cable pulling. Fiber is pulled through the main line that was placed.
- Mainline splicing and testing. Fiber optic splicing is the process of joining two separate fiber optic cables together. It is then tested for its strength.
- Drops to home. Facilities or “drops” are buried from the mainline to the customer’s home. This includes placing the fiber which will also be spliced and tested.
- Installation and customer connection. Once a neighborhood is fiber-ready, current customers and new customers that signed up for service will be contacted about the installation their new fiber internet service.
