NEW ULM, MN – January 24, 2020 – The Minnesota State Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) announced Nuvera as one of the companies that will receive state grants for broadband development.  Nuvera received two of the 30 grants across the state.

A total of $23,270,933 was awarded by DEED with the aim of providing reliable, affordable high-speed Internet to more than 10,900 businesses, homes and community institutions throughout the state.

In a public-private partnership, Nuvera was awarded $730K and is matching an additional $1.2M, for a total of $2M in local community investments.  $910K will be used to build fiber connections to homes and businesses in rural areas near Hutchinson including Cedar Mills Township in Meeker County, and Boon Lake and Brookfield Townships in Renville County.  $1.1M will be used to build fiber connections in a rural Brown County area near New Ulm.  President and CEO Glenn Zerbe confirmed the projects will be scheduled in the spring of 2020.

“We are very grateful to be selected in the border-to-border grant process,” he said. “The grants will be utilized to extend our network and bring reliable, affordable broadband services to customers in these areas, including providing Gigabit speeds via fiber-to-the home, which will exceed 2026 state speed goals.”

For the past several weeks I’ve been curiously watching the various crews in my alley working to install Nuvera’s fiber connections to customers’ homes—from digging in the mains to boring through my yard (happening today). Anyone living in the north side of town, or driving through the neighborhoods, has surely seen the work also. I’ve been so curious that on more than a few occasions I have asked the workers to tell me what they’re doing. It finally occurred to me that some of our readers may also be curious. Nuvera provided answers to my questions for this article.
